Emergencies

If you're homeless or facing the threat of becoming homeless (within the next 28 days) you should contact your local council housing department. Depending on your circumstances (whether they consider you to be in 'priority need') the council may offer you emergency accommodation (e.g. in a hostel or similar property) and may consider your application further.

Situations where you might be considered to be 'in priority need':

  • If you're aged 16/17
  • If you're under 21 and were previously in care or are pregnant or have dependent children
  • Vulnerable because of threats of violence
  • Homeless because of fire, floods or other emergency situations

In considering your application, the council will also need to clarify whether you are 'intentionally' homeless. If you are found to be intentionally homeless, the council may still offer you emergency accommodation for a maximum period of 28 days. If, however, you are 'in priority need' and not intentionally homeless, the council may attempt to find you temporary accommodation.

If you've having difficulties finding accommodation or if you just need some advice on housing contact either your local Connexions Centre, your local Citizens Advice Bureau or ring Shelterline on: freephone 0808 800 4444.
